UDL, UX, LX and accessibility paper

Accessibility, Usability, and Universal Design for Learning: Discussion of Three Key LX/UX Elements for Inclusive Learning Design | TechTrends (springer.com) Petrie et al. (2015) felt the need to come up with a unified definition. In order to achieve this goal, they have gone through an extensive literature review of 50 available definitions on web accessibility and came up with common concepts that reside within the definition dealing with web accessibility. The concepts were a) “groups of users, characteristics, needs of users”; b) “what users should be able to do”; c) “technologies used”; d) “characteristics of the website”; e) “design and development of the website”; and f) “characteristics of the situations of use” (p.2). Based on these concepts, following definition has been created: All people, particularly disabled and older people, can use websites in a range of contexts of use, including mainstream and assistive technologies; to achieve this, websites need to be de...

Framing

Lit review intro/context - Frame from a social justice perspective - Sonka Framed by the principles of the social model of disability and inclusive design. Both the social model of disability and inclusive design is positioned from the human perspective of inclusion and awareness of the human experience rather than the universal accessibility of an output or the technical specification of a digital product. The curriculum therefore is aimed at general digital accessibility awareness rather than specifically computing or digital skills and why it is relevant in this context to citizenship in the digital society. Many commentators refer to digital accessibility as a human right and a social responsibility or justice.

Identify, innovate, implement (III)

When we talk about accessibility, we often grapple with complex definitions and intricate details. However, Steve Tyler puts it succinctly: "Disability is the degree to which usability is affected by functional limitation or capability." With this understanding, our approach to resolving accessibility issues at AccessFirst should be straightforward and simple, like 1, 2, 3.  Here’s what I mean: Identify - Recognise the diverse needs and barriers faced by users. Innovate - Develop solutions that are intuitive and inclusive. Implement - Ensure these solutions are easily accessible to all.

SCULPTURE

A sculpture of building blocks for inclusive digital learning.

Great quote for work

Design principles are often seen as very rigid and uncompromising guidelines that dictate design decisions and specific ways of working. But actually, they are an incredible tool to rally the team around one purpose , but also document values and beliefs that the organization embodies. It aligns teams and informs decision making.
