Mapping everything out in the sunshine

Image
Mapping the situation was useful to explore what I want to do. I’m not sure I want to develop new theories, I’m more interested in just exploring and inquiring. I’m keen to do two phases, first get some initial interview data to cross reference with the literature to find out what is and isn’t currently known, taught or current perceptions, all transcribed and coded to identify key themes, topics, categories or maybe theories. The second phase of focus group/workshop sessions introducing some concepts, ideas and resources and working with participants how this fits or could fit into classroom practice, curriculum and everyday basic skills to underpin an awareness of digital accessibility so it’s embedded into the culture and mindset. These sessions would also be good to deeper dive on any themes highlighted in the initial interviews. I’m keen in the focus sessions for participants to be introduced to basic concepts, discuss them as a focus group and work out how this could become a pos...

Methodologies and potential of grounded theory

Image
Inspired by books: Grounded theory: A practical guide (Melanie Boris and Jane Mills) 2015 Constructing grounded theory: A practical guide through qualitative analysis (Kathy Charmaz) 2006 Free flow writing and thoughts without references added (inc useful links to print): Despite recent developments and new legal requirements in digital accessibility little is known about what young people learn or know in this area during their educational development, time at school and how they might respond to this being added to the curriculum. A foundation of knowledge in digital accessibility basic concepts would help prepare them for the workplace and the ever evolving needs in society for digital content to be accessible and inclusive by design.   (Social model of disability) I believe this study would be best to adopt a grounded theory methodology to explore experiences, knowledge and opinions of pupils and their teachers in primary and secondary education on their understanding of basic ...

Framing the baseline

To be able to plan any curriculum intervention or update we need to ascertain what level those we are teaching it to are at as well as those who need to teach it. At primary and secondary school levels it is very unlikely learners will be able to master the full WCAG requirements, it’s more likely they need to grasp the introductory conceptual understanding of digital accessibility and the needs that brings. This baseline awareness and practice principles. Forming this baseline is that starting point to introduce the subject into the curriculum as a society need, and consider it in the context of the social model of disability, what some of the basic barriers are and the basics that can begin to address them. Back up with psychological theory of learning capability at that age Piaget, Vygotsky, Bruner?

Grounded theory?

Image
The original work of Glaser and Strauss (1967)  challenged  the belief that qualitative research lacks rigour and that by using and building comparative analysis this can enable the generation of new insights and theories. They further  explain  how a theory can be generated from data inductively and that  this  technique can  provide a unique  outlook where quantitative methodology can be the most valid, unbiased way to determine truths about the world, especially when it covers new uncovered ground. As  Berks et al (2019) explain that grounded theory represents both a method of inquiry and a resultant product of that inquiry. In the case of my own research I’m investigating an unknown situation with the aim of building new insight or theories that could help inform future curriculum developments for digital accessibility. Berks et al (2019) describe the development of the constant comparative method which is a key element of grounded...

Intro notes

Introduction   #The legal digital accessibility remit Equality act and reasonable adjustments living in a digitally focused world so we have an obligation to educate our next generation. Facts about those with impairments that digital accessibility can help/ address  Social and society model of disability means it’s the environment that causes the barriers. Web regs that have been introduced only account for websites and that’s a small amount of our everyday digital content. Currently this is driven by compliance rather than a wider culture of digital accessibility maturity.  It’s interesting because the equality act and applying it to the world in 2022 as apprised to 2010 when it came into existence is different, the world has moved on. The momentum of the digital age and everyday practices is just not accounted for, or it is but because the web regs appear to be ticking that box the everyday digital contexts get overlooked. This is the much wider digital content ...
