SCULPT idea for paper
The context and social model situation- our inaccessible digital society. The legal backdrop.
The lack of educational input
The argument for education earlier and in primary.
Align to other topics for social responsibility- and citizenship and age range perfect.
The need for embedded education for longer term impact- a framework that follows through.
Keeping it simple- low hanging fruit- support from Microsoft is significant- using perm, temp, sit. It’s for everyone and everyone’s responsibility.
Currently learning objectives in other contexts - list the popular ones. And that interventions are effective in raising awareness
Frameworks that are popular for foundational principles- SLIDE, THRIVE, SCULPT.
Basic resources to pick up and run with- current barrier is teacher knowledge and lack of resources to support them. Bitesize.
Popularity of SCULPT- GCS, DWP, AbilityNet - reference making accessibility accessible (Wilson, 2020) and the preconceptions of complexity- a topic that’s hard to recruit, but once that hurdle overcome and preconceptions overcome, it’s more simple than anticipated because the basics principles of digital accessibility and SCULPT are simple (Wilson, 2023; Christopherson, 2022; Hope, 2021?).
Limitations of the current SCULPT principles - other principles to add - captions, checkers, transcripts, reading order - easy concepts evidence.
Doesn’t capture the learning objectives but is a useful and popular framework- fusing the two to focus on some basic concepts that could easily be applied- make a significant impact- build a pathway for future developers and careers - there are roles dedicated to it - make it a norm, not a niche.
Recommend this as a hypothetical framework as..
Education for the National Curriculum.
- Awareness of accessibility (disability and inclusive design- who it impacts and what it is)
- Barriers in digital content (demonstration of when it doesn’t work - AT)
- Legal context (regs national and international/WCAG/Equality Act - reasonable adjustments- legal cases - captions Canada)
- Empathetic modelling (the human impact and experiential activities)
- Digital skills development (how to guides and core principles)
Using the established framework of:
SCULPT for Accessibility
- Structure of a document using headings and lists
- Colours, contrast, captions and checkers
- Use of images and alt text
- Links and logical reading order
- Plain language
- Tables, transcripts and text formatting
Create a matrix table of ideas and resources (this could be explored by the teachers). SIMPLE(Smiley) ADVANCED (mortar board) - but overall aimed at creators of everyday content not developers as that’s catered for in WCAG and IAAP/Level 4 apprenticeship education and degree courses.
Left column lists the ABLED objectives
Further columns for each letter of SCULPT so each letter can have suggestions and resources to choose from.
E.g. awareness of captions (temp, perm, sit ) alt text (who it’s for and why it’s important- blind and not loading- handouts to demonstrate ETC - social media perspective
Awareness of disability- what is accessibility- what is digital accessibility- who does it impact- why it’s about everyone perm, temp, sit/ features you might find to help e.g Immersive reader.
Compare finding links between click here and descriptive links (Baker et al, YEAR) - reference the papers these activities are mentioned or have influenced the idea (in time create pages with instructions and resources on to be able to download and use in the classroom.
Scaffolding for the teaching of foundational digital accessibility awareness. - teachers learning and practice needs support (key argument and outcome). Scaffolding for teachers to scaffold the learning of students.
WCAG and websites - reading order could be keyboard accessibility - link to resources, handouts, videos
Barriers- alt text, links, headings, hashtags
Put the matrix table on L2E - can you upload a html file in the files?
Like how a systematic review is displayed in papers
The basic matrix can make bullet point suggestions. E.g. awareness - describe the disabilities that benefit from captions/ alt text- vision, hearing, aging etc

This would need more research to evaluate its usefulness to teachers and its effectiveness when being used to plan and implement classroom learning.
