A digital accessibility awareness curriculum: Learn to Enable Digital for Everyone

Introduction to what I’m doing (what I’ve previously done) - rationale for teaching ‘of’ accessibility as well as us teaching accessibly.

  • Unlearning versus doing it by learning default
  • Preparing young people for the world in which they live
  • Not just the responsibility of IT profession, it’s everyone’s responsibility
  • Ethical and social responsibility to equip the next generation with the skills for their future world
  • This topic or awareness raising is currently not in the curriculum
  • We have to learn about it to make things inclusive, but why don’t they, it’s their future world (this is currently overlooked)

1, How far does digital accessibility go? Q&A

E.g. where is it relevant: Docs, presentations, videos, podcasts, emails, calendars, websites (content, menus, booking, applications, shopping, payments, reporting, banking), games, social media, digital design work for packaging/posters, use of apps and devices/phones, atms, parking meters, travel ticket machines, TVs. (Show list after a brief Q&A)

(Can you think of any more?)

2, If I said how much do you think it exists in a range of professions, such as Drs, hospitality, travel and tourism, social care, business start ups, media, could you offer/explain contextual examples?

Show Hassell poster as an example of contextualising it to a situation e.g. Adult care.

Out of these I will make posters to promote the mainstream awareness and application of digital accessibility and what people can do to help and contribute. E.g. everyday things/ basic underlying principles we can all apply like hashtags, emojis, alt text, headings, colour contrast, captions.
Bring it into focus for mainstream awareness that it doesn’t just sit in IT.
Leave details on form if you would find this useful.
Could it be built in as a lesson/s in the tutorial/teaching subject framework - relevance to the subject within the context of a digital society.

3, What basic tips could you offer for young people? How could they play their part e.g. what would they easily be able to understand and apply? Where could we add it in, reinforce its importance as a useful and inclusive skill for the workplace. E.g.,
Not just IT, everyone can contribute to an inclusive digital world.
Handouts used in previous sessions/ could I deliver with you sessions around this so we can start to make that impact.

BDF:
What basis knowledge would you like to see young people learn, think of those coming out of school or those old enough to use social media. What should be the absolute baseline of awareness and skills for ‘everyday content knowledge that they could apply no matter what IT skills they have (including if they haven’t chosen ICT as an option)

Who would like to participate and input into my research/ willing to be interviewed and contribute to this baseline as a curriculum.
