More to explore and Robert Gagne

Thoughts and follow ups after reading book. Chapter 5 particularly useful.

Robert Gagne:

In addition, the theory outlines nine instructional events and corresponding cognitive processes:

  1. Gaining attention (reception)
  2. Informing learners of the objective (expectancy)
  3. Stimulating recall of prior learning (retrieval)
  4. Presenting the stimulus (selective perception)
  5. Providing learning guidance (semantic encoding)
  6. Eliciting performance (responding)
  7. Providing feedback (reinforcement)
  8. Assessing performance (retrieval)
  9. Enhancing retention and transfer (generalization).

These events should satisfy or provide the necessary conditions for learning and serve as the basis for designing instruction and selecting appropriate media (Gagne, Briggs & Wager, 1992).

*Useful as a framework to ask or plan questions in the research e.g., present the stimulus, elicit performance and provide feedback.

To look at further:

  • Grounded theory (Charmaz, 2006) - a mix of positivist and interpretivist methods to develop theories rather than test an existing one
  • Symbolic interactionism

Grounded theory theoretical saturation:

Paradigm mainly socially constructed approach but with mixed methods to aid triangulation. Based on multidisciplinary approach which sits in different research and subject domain disciplines e.g. technical computing and disability. On (p.67) the book speaks of needing a broad range of participants and influenced by an even wider variety of stakeholders.

Methodology of design based research/ lesson study as a structure and pedagogy frameworks to plan and assess the categories and stages of learning. Planned, enacted and experienced. In the book it refers to intended curriculum (the vision underlying the curriculum), implemented curriculum (documents and learning materials and the enactment) and attained curriculum (learning experiences from a pupil perspective) that fits perfectly with the pedagogical framework for planning and analysis (P.69).

Critical theory framework mainly of grounded theory to see what emerges / gain insights from the new topic on the curriculum. However pedagogy as planned will bring with it testing of what is planned and predicted against what happened, but letting it play out will bring new theoretical insights. Great to triangulate.

Need to look at grounded theory data analysis methodology/methods.
