Refining the focus group questions
Could digital accessibility awareness be taught to pupils in school and what type of support would be needed for teachers and schools to implement it?
- What prior knowledge and experience do school teachers have to be able to teach concepts related to digital accessibility awareness?
- How can digital accessibility awareness concepts be integrated into existing lessons on the national curriculum in schools?
- What professional development or school-level support is needed to implement the teaching of digital accessibility awareness in practice?
Lit review questions/sections:
- Background and context (societal) - why its important/significant and why education is needed to address the problem.
- The school context for introducing digital accessibility education e.g. educational guidance context (DofE, new curriculum context, recent inclusion emphasis).
- Where is digital accessibility currently taught within the educational curriculum?
- Teacher knowledge related to digital accessibility awareness education (limited to HE - lacks resources for pedagogical implementation)
- Lack of existing curriculum- so - what are the learning components related to digital accessibility awareness education?
- If introduced in schools- When could digital accessibility awareness be introduced into the school learning journey for pupils?
FOCUS GROUP TIMING - 60/4 =15mins per category of PCKg (2 questions per section) 60/8 = 7.5minutes per question.
Or 10x10=100 - 1.5hours
Consider PCKg
- Subject knowledge
- Teaching (pedagogical) knowledge
- Knowledge of UKS2 learners
- Knowledge of the learning environment and context
Consider how concepts like British Values are integrated into lessons.
FOCUS GROUPS
The ENABLED e-learning offers an introductory outline of the five concepts related to digital accessibility awareness.
You will now explore these concepts further in relation to your own existing knowledge and how you might include these within lessons to teach them (or raise awareness of them) to your pupils.
Subject knowledge:
- How confident are you about understanding this specific concept to be able to teach it to pupils?
- What type of continuous professional development would be needed to support you and your teaching of this specific area?
Teaching (pedagogical) knowledge:
- Describe an existing UKS2 lesson and how learning activities/opportunities related to this concept could be integrated to raise awareness/engage learners with this topic?
- Please outline the type of supporting classroom resources or materials you would need to teach/include this specific activity/idea. Please outline example/s.
- What assessment techniques could you use to measure learner understanding (or confusion) about this specific activity/idea?
Knowledge of UKS2 learners:
- What type of learner response at UKS2 do you anticipate in relation to integrating this specific activity/idea within a lesson (positive or negative) and why?
- How might this activity/idea relate to other classroom learning or personal/school experiences the UKS2 pupils have had?
Environmental and context:
- From an educational setting and national curricular perspective what supportive frameworks, guidance or infrastructure would schools need to be able to integrate this type of learning at UKS2?
- How could the inclusion of this activity/topic on the curriculum be supported more widely or strategically by educational organisations (e.g. DofE, Ofsted or exam boards)
- We are specifically discussing pupils at UKS2, but do you think learning this concept might be more suitable at a different educational school level instead and if so why?
