Some mainstream innovations are because of disability communities e.g. typewriter, text messages, Alexa, electric toothbrush, bendy straw (what do all of these have in common)

The right support in society people with disabilities can thrive and succeed in the same way as everyone else - Chris McCausland is a great example. Rachel’s ear - deaf lawyer. Stephen Hawkin.

Assumptions lead to people seeing accessibility as someone else’s responsibility. Yet we can all do things to break down barriers in society.

Barriers examples - use current handouts of headings/links/alt text/colour alone - keyboard accessibility - these can impact and benefit anyone. Demo of screenreader barriers - elements list. Experience them for yourself (experiential and empathy).

Legal overview- UK and others - guidelines that underpin legal are WCAG. Checkers exist but only find half of the problems and why we need to combine knowledge with checkers.

Beyond websites there are the basics of POUR for websites- everyday content is SCULPT/THRIVES/SLIDE - ally checker in Microsoft.

Taking the basics of SCULPT - the parts of it - the parts checkers don’t check (relate back to the links/headings demonstrations)

Headings demo, alt text, colour contrast, links, plain language and jargon, tables - other guidance and tips exist on Learn to Enable website.

Suggestions for activities on the site and use it to spread the word. Training session available on the site to inform others.

Text taken from original proposal to unpack/expand: The barriers and ‘unlearning’ highlighted during SCULPT were potentially framed by prior complex  beliefs and understandings and ‘unlearning’ or ‘retrofitting’ skills (Youngblood, 2010). As Gu (2010, p.340) explains “a large part of human and professional knowledge can hardly retain its original meaning when it is divorced from the contexts in which it was constructed and produced.” This made me consider that these skills should potentially be taught at the point these original meanings are constructed and that happens at a much younger age.
