Headings in Word

Chapters in a book help us locate the information we are seeking

Headings on a printed out or newspaper allow us to navigate through written materials to help us know what content is there, offering us clues to what content is include, how information might be organised or structured

Visually it offers cues to skim read content or locate what we need

In the same way headings, if added to digital content in the right way can provide the same means of navigation to those with visual impairments who use screen reading technology

Roger - headings and how they benefit him - barriers when headings aren’t there. Demo in screen reader - tabbing through and elements list.

DA as a subject swimming pool that we want everyone to get involved in.

Swimming pool concept

  • Everyone needs water to wash to maintain cleanliness - everyone dips their toes in even if they can’t swim.
  • Some people take a bit more interest, learn to swim  and commit to going swimming to create a healthy lifestyle
  • Others take swimming seriously and develop a deeper understanding to a professional standard or even expertise

Just like the swimming pool, here’s my digital accessibility analogy:

  • Every needs a basic level of understanding to maintain a level of equality awareness in society
  • Some take it a bit more seriously and commit to making it a regular thing they do to foster a healthy attitude towards digital equity
  • Others take it much more seriously and develop a deeper understanding to a professional standard or even expertise
