Learning to teach the next generation about digital accessibility awareness in primary school.

Helen Wilson

Digital and online content pervades every aspect of our society, such as in education, the workplace and our social lives, and throughout our lives we are both consumers as well as creators of digital content. Looking at our digital society through the lens of the social model of disability we need to actively prevent any barriers in the use of the digital content we create. It is reported that one in five people have some form of disability, and with that being such a significant proportion of society it is vital that everyone is educated to know how to be digitally inclusive. However, although digital accessibility is beginning to be included on degree level courses and beyond, everyday digital accessibility awareness is not currently on the school curriculum to prepare our next generation to be inclusive. This presentation proposes a research study that aims to explore the teaching of digital accessibility awareness within the primary school context, more specifically at the point where this knowledge could first be introduced and established in the educational curriculum. By adopting a design based research approach and using the traditions of lesson study to facilitate the process, this research seeks to offer an in-depth study of how teachers could develop their pedagogical content knowledge to be able to deliver this new topic on the curriculum. The presentation will outline , the rationale behind the study, the gap in the literature, the methodology and the data collection and analysis methods proposed.

This presentation will outline a research proposal prior to ethical approval being granted.
