Thoughts about DBR iterations

Why education design based research   Why pedagogical framework - why is this important? Pedagogical framework Not been done or taught before so appropriate activities will be identified from higher Ed contexts and adapted for key stage 2 beginners level. The main objective of the first iteration will identify and plan how this could work at ks2 and after testing it out what would need to be reviewed and adjusted to work more effectively at that new level of learner. Primarily reflections from the teacher/researcher/observer perspective - team teach. *Construction of knowledge between researcher and teacher - what can work at key stage 2? The second iteration would be a more refined set of activities appropriate for key stage 2 and it would be more about the learner feeding back to the research in terms of the activities and their learning - learning as enacted - did this work better, what are the learners taking from the activities - what could make the ‘activities’ more ef...

TO ADD: Hassell book

Some of the largest companies on the planet including Apple, Google and Microsoft are recognising that inclusive design is an idea that needs to go mainstream (p.6). Most organisations are treating accessibility just like a band-aid (p.24). Some will only think about accessibility when they get caught (p.25). We need to fix the problems in the process not the product to prevent reoccurrence (p.25). It’s clear that if accessibility is important today, it will only get more important over time as the number of people with impairments in the aging population who wish to use digital products grows (p.54). It is unethical or contrary to human rights to unnecessarily exclude disabled people from the benefits of modern technologies that increase their ability to live independently and be fully engaged members of society (p.64). Spending time making products accessible during its development can save you money once launched in terms of minimising complaints and lower the cost of building ...

Where in life do we learn inclusive skills? In my education as an engineer, designer and citizen I never formally learned about inclusion or exclusion. Accessibility, sociology and civil rights weren’t required curricula for learning how to build technology. (P.7) As I grew in my career as a technologist, I noticed a void of information in how to practice inclusive design for digital technologies. (P.7). One of the most common fears related to inclusion is a fear of using the wrong words, many leaders would rather avoid the topic than look bad or offend someone (p.8) There are many interpretations of the word ‘inclusion’ but very little guidance on what exactly this word means (p.8). The underlying challenge is the vast complexity of human diversity, there are endless nuances and considerations when designing for people. There is no single answer that suits everyone (p.9). Technologies are permeating our public and private spaces (p.11) One small change towards inclusion can benefit ma...

Definitions and orientate the study

Introduce the backdrop of world has changed to digital  1 in 5 disability and what that includes. Assistive technology advances, but they only work effectively when content is made in an accessible way, this is a problem in society as content is inaccessible. National and international relevance- laws overview. The needs for accessible content framed by the social model of disability (evolving from medical model). Medical model - fixing the human - social model fixing the environment they work in.  Medical model looks at the disability first, rather than the person. (Medical model of fixing) - fix in solutions rather than thinking universally so everyone can use things. Social model- society are the ones producing digital content therefore it is society that needs educating. How can society as a whole support inclusion in our digital world if they are not aware of how to do that, society is everyone and therefore everyone who creates any form of digital content at the very lea...

Contested knowledge context?

Web regulations are there to justify the social model so as a society we remove barriers Checklist- add-on - still sat it medical model Historical context of disability- segregation at schools, accommodations (useful resources week 1 Teach Access Course) Meeting needs of disabled people to ensure they can be independent and empowered- social justice  Social model part of that - society is making the barriers not disabilities

Sapir questions

The spotlight sessions are conversational and fun, below is a list of the questions to help you prepare: Tell us a bit about yourself Previously worked in e-learning development Former further education teacher in digital design  Recently worked in content design and accessibility  Tell us about the work you are doing Learn to enable is my research It’s about educating our next generation in the basic principles and awareness of digital accessibility I believe our next generation can have digital accessibility built into their mindset through awareness education so it becomes the norm, not an add-on  I’m collecting and collating anything that could bring this underpinning awareness into the curriculum  It’s early days, my PHD is looking at primary education but I’ve been doing workshops with FE and am doing a teaching placement with year 9 (14 year olds) to try out my ideas What motivated you to do this type of work Previously developed a model in my workplace Challe...

Notes about theoretical positions: Equal access to digital information for those with disabilities is not progressing well. Although there are laws in place to make websites and content accessible this is still not commonplace. E.g. reports - home pages/AbilityNet/Hassell/Valuable 500. In education progress is similarly slow where very few courses are including the top to educate our next generation and there is a skills gap and demand in industry for these skills. 1 in 5 in society have some form of disability, figures range from 15 to 20% of the population in internationally. According to many studies where digital accessibility has been taught, students have little awareness of the topic when they start their courses as it has not been covered or raised on the curriculum in schools or colleges.  Courses that do exist are primarily at HE or post graduate level, but this is either very minimal, not a mandatory unit or doesn’t exist at all. Disabled people are being let down...

Voctech

Its spread and use in the wider community eg DWP, IPO suggests that this type of awareness and skills support is needed to build a culture of inclusion in organisations.  Taught me that this idea can work in the workplace. L2E website also shared under the same conditions but a broader range of basic principles for digital accessibility. The specific objective of L2E is to build a toolkit to raise awareness and teach this type of awareness and skills in schools, vocational education and the workplace.
