The government guidance has several sources of guidance for meeting the web regulations. Beyond meeting the WCAG criteria and providing an accessibility statement they emphasise the importance of including disabled users and their needs during the building and testing of websites (Accessibility Community, 2021). They further explain that users need to be included in the testing from the start, throughout the build and before launching at beta stage (Accessibility Community, 2022) and offer disabled user personas to build awareness and guide testing (Central Digital and Data Office, 2017). It is made clear from the guidance that website accessibility is is balance of understanding disabled user needs and experiences as well as the technical WCAG specifications.
Automated checking isn’t enough so user testing with the disabled community is vital to ensure digital content works.
