Shift left for skills too
If you’ve been to any accessibility events or webinars lately, you will begin to hear the term ‘shift left’
The idea that accessibility testing or fixing comes at the end is not the best practice way. Shifting left means looking back to when it’s most useful to add accessibility into the equation. From the beginning, bake it in, test early.
Catch defects and establish good practice as early as possible. Plan for it throughout the process, test throughout the process, build awareness, skills and knowledge throughout the process.
Agile development, agile accessibility
Imagine building a website and having to duplicate work when you fix it at the end. Think of a simple aspect such as colour contrast, this is simple to apply right from the start. Yet, this is often tested and fixed at the end. You plan your pallet and check colours before you apply them.
Shift left, we’ve heard this term in accessibility development. Why can’t we apply this to awareness and skills development.
Think about awareness for accessibility, we do it on an add-hock, if we need to know learning cycle. And that brings challenges, barriers, preconceptions to overcome and unlearning to do.
